John 1:12
Have you ever dreamed before wishing that you are the son of a wealthy businessman or a son of a known politician – a congressman, a senator, a governor, or more so, son of a president of a first world country? Or probably a son of a known celebrity like Mel Gibson, Clint East wood, Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger, etc. etc. Or probably the son of a well-known author or speaker. Yes, I think when I was a kid then. But eventually, that was changed, especially when I came to know the Lord Jesus Christ as my savior and Lord. A lot of things changed, but I still didn’t have a full grasp of who I really am back then.
Do you know who you are? If you came to know Jesus Christ and trusted Him as your savior, too, then we have a common position in Christ. Maybe you’re not the son of those famous people that I have mentioned above, but do you know whose sons and daughter are we? We are sons and daughters of the LIVING GOD, THE ALMIGHTY. That’s neat! If we just realized that, we would not be dreaming to be the son or daughter of a famous person.
But becoming a child of God is not automatic. There is a decision to make. My observation is that, there are mindsets in some parts of the world that believes everybody is from God and, therefore, children of God as well. Maybe you have heard this comment, “everybody is God’s children and belongs to God.” Well, I’m afraid that this is not a true statement based on John 1: 12, which says, “but as many as received Him, to them he gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in his name.” Now, this verse is saying that God did not give everybody the right to become children of God, but only those who receive Him and believe in Him (Jesus Christ). In John 8:44 on the other hand, Jesus told His opponents that they belong to their father, the devil and not God.
People must understand this. And you who are reading this message right now that have a similar mindset about being a child of God you must know this too. It is not automatic for everyone to become a child of God. There is a process in the bible called being “born again” that is found in John 3:1-7. The scholars termed it as the “regeneration process.” Being a child of God cannot be separated from being born again. The very reason why one is called the child of God is that he was born (again) into the family of God. If you have experienced this process (which only God and you knew), then start enjoying the privileges of being a child of God.
What are some things that we can enjoy as a child of God?
a) We can enjoy the intimate love of God! In 1 John 3: 1 says, “See how great a love the Father has bestowed on us, that we would be called children of God; and such we are. For this reason, the world does not know us because it did not know Him.”
b) We can enjoy the fellowship and commune with God through prayer, wherein we can cry to Him, saying ABBA Father. Romans 8:15
c) We can enjoy being led by the Spirit. In Romans 8:14, “For all who are being led by the Spirit of God, these are the sons of God.
d) The Spirit the Himself testifies with our spirit that we are children of God. Romans 8:16
e) Ultimately, we have the blessed hope that when we passed away this earthly life, we have the assurance of everlasting life with God.
